Putting a netherrack into a furnace, blast furnace or trommel in the fuel slot turns the blocks into their respective "active" (lit) state and will remain in their lit state until a proper fuel source (coal, charcoal, etc.) is placed inside along with a smeltable item which will revert the block ...
