Guides to saving Nether chunks

Post by Yojin »

These are guides on saving both specific nether chunks and nether chunks around spawn

Apologies if these aren't clear enough, please reply if you have any questions

SETUP
  • locate your nether region folder. This can be found at minecraft/saves/(YOURWORLD)/dimensions/1. You can also backup the entire dimension 1 folder for ease of mind.
  • Inside your region folder, create 3 new folders, name them old chunks, safe chunks, and temp.

SAVING CHUNKS NEAR SPAWN
  • Move all .mcr files to your old chunks folder
  • Copy a few files back into your region folder. I recommend doing this in pairs. ( 0.1 and 0.-1 for example )
  • Trial and error, enter your world and check if you have enough saved chunks. If not, leave the world and add more.(You don't have to leave the game to do this)
  • If you're satisfied, move all of your current mcr files to your safe chunks folder. If you believe you have too many, copy all your current mcr files to temp and delete some from your region folder. You might need to leave the game to delete them. Enter the game and check to see if all the chunks you wanna keep are still there. If they're there but you still believe you have too many, delete everything in temp and start the process over. Once finished, move all current mcr files to safe chunks and delete everything in temp

SAVING SPECIFIC CHUNKS IN THE NETHER
  • If you followed the first guide Move the contents of old chunks back into your region folder
  • Enter your world ingame and head to the chunk you wanna save
  • While ingame, move all mcr files into your old chunks folder
  • Skip any files that cannot be moved
  • Leave the game and move all current files to temp
  • Copy a few of these files back into your region folder, then start the game and join your world. Attempt to find the one that contains the chunk. You'll know you've got it if you actually spawn in the chunk and not a freshly generated one
  • If you find the file that contains the chunk but the chunk is cut in half or something, that means the chunk is split between two mcr files. Continue the process until you find the second one
  • Once you find your mcr file(s), move them to safe chunks and delete everything in temp. Repeat the entire process for any other chunks you wanna save

Once you're done with everything, keep your "safe chunks" folder somewhere safe. The files inside contain all the chunks you wanna save for 8.0!

Please note that MCR files save data for multiple chunks at once, afaik there is no way to save a specific chunk without saving some chunks around it as of now
